Pelvic Tilt Movement Challenge
The Pelvic Tilt Movement Challenge aims to improve a subject’s control of pelvic movement through a series of graded challenges. These exercises specifically work on controlling movement within a range and then learning to dissociate pelvic movement from the movement of the trunk. This test can be performed while standing or sitting. The protocol will detail the steps required to perform the test while the subject is in a sitting position.
When you begin a Pelvic Tilt Movement Challenge you will see a hang glider on the screen. The hang glider is controlled by the sensor on your subject’s pelvis. Use this screen to allow your subject to practice controlling the hang glider. If the subject tilts their pelvis anteriorly the hang glider will fly upward, if they tilt their pelvis posteriorly the hang glider will fly downward. When you are satisfied with your subjects understanding of the test select ‘NEXT’. After selecting ‘NEXT’, please follow the steps below to perform a Pelvic Tilt Assessment:
1. Ask the subject to demonstrate their maximum anterior tilt and posterior tilt independently.
2. Assist the subject in performing an anterior and posterior pelvic tilt.
3. Set the training parameters for your Movement Challenge. The range achieved in step 2 is displayed on the screen. Click and drag the white arrows to change this range. As you move the lines you will see the degrees of movement and the % of the range displayed.
4. Set the number of reps to be performed in the test.
5. Ask the subject to follow the hang glider up and down on the screen. Each time the subject reaches the target anterior and posterior range they will increase their rep count by one.
6. The challenge finishes when the subject reaches the target reps or the time limit is reached.
7. Once the test is finished the results are displayed on the screen. These results include:
- Active assisted range.
- Target assisted range.
- Time taken.
- Repetitions achieved.
8. There are now 3 options to choose from:
- Begin the next challenge (advanced).
- Repeat the challenge.
- Generate a report.
This test challenges the subject to move their pelvis with good control while simultaneously maintaining a stable trunk position. The dial on the screen indicates trunk position. The subjects are allowed to move their trunk from -5˚ extension to 5˚ flexion. If the trunk moves beyond this range, this movement must be corrected before the hang glider can be controlled again.
1. Ask the subject to sit in a good posture and then centre the hang glider.
2. Repeat Steps 1 - 4 in the ‘BASIC’ test.
3. Select ‘BEGIN’.
4. Ask the subject to perform pelvic tilting and try to maintain a stable pelvis.
5. If the subject moves outside the permitted trunk range, the hang glider will ‘wobble’ from side to side.
6. The subject must correct their position to continue adding reps to their tally.
Generating a Report
Generate a report by selection of the report icon on the right hand side of the screen. This report will display information for both ‘BASIC’ and ‘ADVANCED’ Pelvic Tilt tests. The reports display:
- Active and assisted range of pelvic movement.
- Time taken to complete test.
- Number of successful repetitions.
- Comparison to previous episodes.
